Speaker's Biography

Professor Kelly Mackintosh

Kelly is a Professor of Physical Activity and Health specialising in assessing and promoting physical activity across the health spectrum and lifespan, with a particular focus on children and adolescents. Much of her work utilises technology, encompassing novel ways to visualise and promote physical activity, such as 3D printing. Intervention strategies have ranged from curriculum-based to high-intensity interval training, with a key emphasis of their associated evaluations. Her work has been ranked in the top 1% in her field and led to international awards and invitations to be a witness at the Senedd and House of Lords. She was on the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO’s) expert working group for updating the Children and Young People’s UK Physical Activity Guidelines in 2019, as well as the CMO’s expert committee for physical activity surveillance. Kelly leads the Exercise, Medicine and Health research group at Swansea University and is a member of the World Health Organization’s Health Enhancing Physical Activity Strategic Management Board. Most recently, Kelly was integral in the establishment of, and co-Directs, the Welsh Institute of Physical Activity Health and Sport (WIPAHS), which is a partnership with Sport Wales and all Higher Education Institutes across Wales, bringing together academia, those facilitating physical activity, policy makers, and the public, to address fundamental questions surrounding the nations’ health and well-being.

Professor Melitta McNarry

Melitta specialises in cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity across the health, fitness and life-span, with a particular interest in paediatric and clinical populations. Specifically, Melitta is interested in the dose-response relationship between physical activity and health outcomes across the activity spectrum, from breaking up prolonged sitting in sedentary individuals to determining the acute and chronic influences of exercise. Building on earlier work on inspiratory muscle training and high-intensity interval training for children and those with respiratory conditions such as asthma and cystic fibrosis, recent work has focused on the development of home-based rehabilitation strategies for people experiencing Long COVID and the interaction between air pollution and physical activity in determining health. As the Research Lead for the Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health and Sport (WIPAHS), Melitta strives to ensure the translation of research into practice to generate high-quality, meaningful impact.

In celebration of the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s newly promoted Professors, we would like to cordially invite you to join us for the inaugural lectures of Professor Kelly Mackintosh and Professor Melitta McNarry on Wednesday 24th May 2023 in the ESRI Lecture Theatre 001.

All staff and students are welcome to attend both talks, or you may choose to attend just one. Please specify your preference during registration so that we can accurately track numbers.

Refreshments and an opportunity for networking will take place 2.45 - 3.15pm.

Professor Kelly Mackintosh will deliver a lecture entitled:

'The Technology Paradox: Measuring, Monitoring and Promoting Physical Activity'

It is well-established that individuals are insufficiently active and engage in excessive sedentary behaviours. Whilst the role of technology in exacerbating these behaviours is commonly accepted, technological advances are also, paradoxically, touted as fundamental to the resolution of this major public health challenge. Indeed, technology cannot only be used as a key tool to promote physical activity but to accurately assess key measurement parameters (i.e., volume and intensity). Specifically, the ability to capture physical activity levels, behaviours and perceptions, easily, non-invasively and long-term provides novel insights that could revolutionise our approach to physical activity and sedentary behaviour intervention design and implementation. The advances in our understanding and knowledge afforded by these technology-based investigations align with key policy drivers for resolving the current physical inactivity epidemic. This talk therefore investigates the use of technology to enhance the accuracy of physical activity assessment and analyses, and considers the use of technology in designing, implementing, and monitoring physical activity interventions.

Professor Melitta McNarry will deliver a lecture entitled:

'Physical Activity and Exercise in Clinical Populations'

Physical activity and exercise are key tenets in the prevention, treatment and/or management of chronic disease. However, despite this vital role, relatively little is known regarding the optimal approach to the promotion of physical activity or exercise in these populations. Furthermore, exercise represents a powerful tool to elucidate the mechanistic basis for the physiological (dys)function characteristic of disease, enabling the tailoring of interventions to improve or ameliorate these limiting factors. This presentation will consider recent work investigating the role of physical activity and exercise in chronic conditions, including Cystic Fibrosis, Asthma and Long COVID.
