Speaker's Biography

Ifor Glyn started his career at the Swansea Drugs Project, one of the first harm reduction agencies in Wales. He also helped establish a substance misuse service within Caerphilly Social Services and worked at WCADA (Welsh Centre for Action on Dependency and Addiction Ltd) before returning to the Swansea Drugs Project as its CEO in 2007. In 2017, Ifor took up the role of director of the Swansea Carers Centre, a charity providing a range of services to unpaid carers in Swansea, such as respite in the home, day centre, welfare benefits, counselling, activities, drop in, specific services for young adult carers, parent carers and mental health. Despite no longer working in the substance misuse field, Ifor continues to be passionate about minimising the harm caused by drugs or alcohol to individuals and communities. Additionally, Ifor is a Welsh speaker and is a frequent contributor to Welsh Language TV and radio.

Des - My name is Des. My background is in Welfare Advice and Advocacy. I am also a Veteran. I currently work at Swansea Carers Centre as the Male Carers Support Worker. My role is to provide support to male carers and to promote awareness of male carers and networks to a number of organisations. I provide one to one work, group sessions and activities such as model making, archery, museum trips, fishing and linking in with other services Swansea Carers Centre offer.

Stephen - My name is Stephen, and I am a carer for my son who has autism along with a genetic disorder. Alongside my professional life, I devote all my time to ensuring my son has a good way of life. This can sometimes be challenging as my son can be non-verbal which means I have to guess what he wants from me. I have had to forego my social life to look after my son, which is sometimes difficult as I miss going out with friends to have a break.

This event presents a unique opportunity to find out what it means to be a male carer courtesy of members of Swansea Carers Centre.

Get a first-hand account of the rewards, challenges and day to day life of a male carer.

Swansea Carers Centre will share information about their group support sessions, and how these sessions provide an opportunity to share experiences and gain emotional support from other people in similar situations.

Members of the Carers Centre will talk about how the Centre can give carers respite from caring, and if you yourself are a carer, you will be able to get advice, information and support tailored towards your caring role.

There will be the opportunity to ask questions during the session and discussion is encouraged.
