Speaker's Biography

Dubbed by some media as ‘the first environmentalist to run a UK bank’, Bevis has led Triodos Bank UK since April 2016. He has spent over 20 years working in sustainability in public, private and voluntary sectors, including ten years in the recycling industry, where he created WRAP’s Financial Mechanisms Programme which leveraged tens of millions of private sector investment into recycling in the early 2000s. During his time leading Triodos Bank UK, the bank has delivered strong growth, launched a personal current account and a crowdfunding platform. Bevis has always worked for values-led organisations and was previously chief executive of Avon Wildlife Trust. He has a first-class business degree and a PhD in Management Science from Swansea University. He is also a Chartered Environmentalist (MCIWM, CEnv) and a Fellow of the RSA.

Rhiannon is the business lead for the Our Planet team and has helped WWF to create 2 films for business - Our Planet: Our Business (2019) and Our Planet: Too Big To Fail (2020). Previously Executive Creative Director at one of Scandinavia’s largest advertising agencies, Rhiannon has over 15 years of experience in marketing, advertising and communication. She has created offline, online and integrated B2B and B2C campaigns for clients including BA, BT, Dell, IKEA and Nike. She holds a first-class honours BA and an MA from Swansea University in English Literature.

Join us for this special online event featuring a screening of Our Planet: Too Big to Fail and a Q&A with Swansea University Alumni Bevis Watts and Rhiannon Shah

Hosted by Swansea University’s Cultural Institute in collaboration with the Alumni and Development Office and Taliesin Arts Centre.

Inspired by the original Netflix Our Planet series, Our Planet: Too Big To Fail explores the risks of inaction, the impact of investing-as-usual, and the critical role the finance sector can play in the fight for our world. The film combines spectacular footage of the natural world from the Our Planet series with thought-provoking interviews from some of the most influential names in the sector like Sir David Attenborough, Mark Carney, Catherine Howarth, Gillian Tett and Swansea University Alumnus Bevis Watts.

Welcome and Introduction from Professor Elwen Evans QC - Executive Dean PVC, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.

Plus Q&A chaired by Mike Buckle, Professor of Finance, School of Management - with Swansea University Alumni Bevis Watts, CEO at Triodos Bank UK who features in the film and Rhiannon Shah, Business Lead on the Our Planet Team at WWF-UK who helped to create it.
