Paola Griffiths - With over seven years of experience as a Research Governance Manager, I specialize in overseeing healthcare research projects across both campus in local and national sites, covering many field of research within Swansea University.
Since 2018, I’ve led initiatives that ensure ethical compliance, data integrity, and regulatory alignment in clinical and operational research. My career began in diagnostic imaging, working as an MRI radiographer within the NHS and private healthcare settings, where I developed a strong foundation in patient care and clinical excellence. This unique blend of frontline clinical experience and strategic research oversight allows me to bridge the gap between innovation and implementation in healthcare environments.

Target Audience: NHS Healthcare Researchers

This course is designed to provide an introduction to Research Governance and Swansea University acting as a Research Sponsor, for NHS research projects involving IRAS applications.

The course will guide a researcher or student through the process of obtaining the Universities’ agreement to act as the research sponsor, including IRAS application Sponsorship Committee requirements, as well as support them with the use of specific document templates, pathways to obtain NHS ethical and Health Research Authority approvals, and gain access to NHS and Social Care study sites.

The course will also include the regulatory requirements for research studies to receive NHS Ethical and HRA approval, as well as details on how to gain NHS site set up in order to begin recruitment.
There will also be information provided on the sponsor requirement for monitoring of research studies, the process for amending a research study, and regulatory reporting requirements.

• What is an Organisational Sponsor for NHS research projects
• When Swansea University will be a Research Sponsor
• The roles and responsibilities of the Sponsor
• The roles of the Chief Investigator and student
• When additional training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) will be needed
• The general legislation involved in research involving human participants
• What a Sponsorship Committee review of a research project is and insurance /institutional sign off required
• Where to go for further advice and support
