Speaker's Biography

Owen Sheers is a poet, author, playwright and Professor of Creative Writing at Swansea University. Twice-winner of Wales Book of the Year, his other awards include the St David Award for Culture, the Wilfred Owen Poetry Award. He has published two poetry collections, 'The Blue Book' and 'Skirrid Hill' which won a Somerset Maugham Award. His verse drama 'Pink Mist', commissioned by BBC Radio 4 and published by Faber in June 2013, won the Hay Festival Poetry Medal and the Wales Book of the Year 2014. In 2009 he wrote and presented 'A Poet’s Guide to Britain', a 6 part series for BBC 4 about poetry and landscape.

Join us to celebrate 20 years since first publication of Owen Sheers’ seminal poetry collection Skirrid Hill.

Skirrid Hill has been a set text on the WJECs AS/A Level English course since 2009, just four years after it was first published. Thousands of students across Wales have studied it since.

In this special event, Swansea University Professor of Creative Writing Owen Sheers will be in conversation with Siân Collins discussing the book and how it has shaped his career as an award-winning poet, playwright and novelist. We’ll also hear recollections from people who have studied and taught the book.
