Humanising Healthcare: Eight Voices in Darkness is a powerful sensory installation exploring the hidden crisis of sight loss and its mental health impact. This immersive sound and photography exhibition shares lived experiences of vision impairment, developed by Cardiff and Anglia Ruskin Universities with artist Richard Bowers and Sight Life’s Photography Club.
The exhibition is open to the public at Chapter Arts Centre, 6–8 November. All are welcome to listen, reflect, and learn.
The event offers rare insight into a marginalised reality often overlooked in mental health service: by 2030, over 2.7 million people in the UK will face untreatable sight loss-often accompanied by undiagnosed depression. Research by Dr Claire Nollett (Cardiff University) highlights that depression rates among visually impaired patients are among the highest of any group.
A dedicated workshop for mental health professionals will be held on 7 November, offering space to explore practical ways to improve accessibility, understanding, and support in clinical practice.
This event is part of the Cardiff University and Swansea University Being Human Festival 2025 Hub Programme.
