Speaker's BiographyWith a PhD and postdoctoral research in Chemistry, Stephen joined the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as a Portfolio Manager, running peer review processes and designing funding schemes. His work at EPSRC also involved broad stakeholder engagement, from developing a nuclear energy technology roadmap with academia, industry and government, to exploring the impacts of Robotics and AI research with experts from Computer Science, Law and Philosophy.
At the University of Southampton he advised academics seeking research funding from early career fellowships to major strategic grants, including how to incorporate impact into research proposals, and working to embed impact into academic culture, institutional systems and governance.
Stephen now provides independent advice and training to universities and researchers to help them win research funding and boost the impact of their research.

From: 12 Jun 2025, 2 p.m.There are many reasons why you might want to report the impact of your work – for your CV, as part of your track record in a funding bid, as part of promotion/progression, as the basis of a press release, blog post and so on. Some journals even have impact papers now! And of course, impact case studies are a feature of the REF assessment. This session will take you through the key elements of an impact case study - story, structure and how to describe and evidence your impact in terms of its reach and significance.
-Understand the critical elements of successful impact case studies and statements for a variety of uses
-Identify and articulate the significance and reach of your research
-Include relevant evidence and align it with the impact
-How to tailor case studies for different audiences and purposes
