This workshop will provide the essential basics to enable academic staff to supervise postgraduate research (PGR) students.
The workshop involves interactive activities, discussions and case studies, and will provide participants with a good grounding in the relevant
Swansea University regulations and the PGR student recruitment process, the roles of different members of the supervisory team, and the
development opportunities available to PGR students.
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
• Be aware of Swansea University regulations around PGR candidature and supervision;
• Be able to apply these regulations in practice;
• Be confident to recruit their first PGR student;
• Understand the roles of the primary supervisor, secondary supervisor, and Director of Studies;
• Have considered the qualities and behaviours of an effective supervisor;
• Know who to contact for further support with each aspect of PGR supervision.

This course is aimed at new supervisors of PGR students, or supervisors who have recently joined the university. However, it is open to any PGR
supervisors and may be beneficial to those looking for a refresher on PGR processes and regulations.
