It is well recognized that at a macro-level, there is substantial between-country differences in healthcare spending and health outcomes. However, there is extremely limited data characterizing between-country differences in treatment patterns and outcomes for patients hospitalized with discrete conditions. In 2018 we founded the International Health Systems Research Collaborative (IHSRC) to address this gap. Working with collaborators in England, the US, Canada, Israel, Taiwan, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, we have begun to elucidate the tradeoffs that are seemingly apparent in all countries’ healthcare systems. In this presentation we will describe: 1) some of the logistical and methodological challenges in conducting international health system comparisons; and 2) describe some of the key findings from our research including studies focusing on emergency department and hospital care.
