Hear from DNA exonerated Ryan Matthews, after he spent five years on death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola for a murder he did not commit.

“The torture I went through … was like something from a horror movie. It still haunts me at times. Nobody could go through that and say that the death penalty is a good idea or that our justice system works. It is a hell I will be trying to recover from every remaining day I live on this earth,” Matthews says in his op-ed. “We should spend the hundreds of millions of dollars we currently spend trying to execute defendants on productive things like education, crime prevention, and victim support.”

The Children’s Legal Centre Wales and the Swansea Law Clinic, based in the School of Law at Swansea University, are excited to welcome Ryan, along with his sister who coordinated his campaign and an attorney who worked on the case to deliver a talk considering what lessons we can learn from America’s ‘in’justice system.

The talk will take place at Swansea University’s Singleton Campus and tickets are free.

This event may be of interest to policy makers, practitioners, academics and students who have interests in children’s rights and youth justice.
