The winner of the 2021 Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK was a nineteen-year-old who demonstrated a wide range of talents and skills that I would not expect to see on any of the learning outcomes of any of the degrees at Swansea University. The Drag Race, along with other similar programmes such as Masterchef, The Great Pottery Throw Down, All that Glitters, etc. are rooted in the way the contestants develop and learn over a series of tasks. There is a great deal here that can speak to the way in which learning is managed at Universities, including task-based learning, block teaching and so on.

Ru Paul’s Drag Race, and the other programmes, also raise significant questions about widening participation and what is an appropriate topic for degree level learning. Finally, the passion, the drive and the sheer enthusiasm, the flair and the creativity, with which the contestant throw themselves into the tasks set by Ru Paul is something that we see very rarely among our own students, and I want to ask how we might inspire our students to flourish and thrive, by focussing on their individual passions and enthusiasms.

This talk will be hosted by Professor Martin Stringer, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at Swansea University and is open to Swansea University staff and students.
