The topic of the workshop, which is being funded by the Association of National Teaching Fellows, is to look at delivering sustainability education at the higher education level taking into account the Welsh legislative and policy context.
The Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 has been described by the United Nations as world-leading sustainability legislation. It makes sustainable development the central organising principle of government in Wales and is the first attempt in the world to enshrine the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into law.
The Act has already influenced education policy for 3 – 16-year-old students through the Curriculum for Wales.
The Welsh government has also said that its Commission for Tertiary Education & Research (CTER), which is proposed in the draft Tertiary Education and Research Bill, will “contribute to the goals set out in the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act” and will plan for an integrated post-16 education sector.
This workshop will therefore look at how sustainable higher education can be delivered and prepare for this policy context, and how it can build students’ sustainability literacy already acquired during primary, secondary and tertiary education.
