Simon Armitage is the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom. He is currently Professor of Poetry at Leeds University and was elected Oxford Professor of Poetry (2015-2019). His numerous accolades include the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and an Ivor Novello Award for song-writing in the BAFTA-winning film Feltham Sings. Armitage has published over a dozen collections of poetry including Magnetic Field which gathers together his poems on Marsden, the Yorkshire village where he grew up and began life as a writer. This year sees publication of A Vertical Art: Oxford Lectures and his much anticipated translation of the medieval poem The Owl and the Nightingale. One of Armitage’s flagship projects as Poet Laureate is the Laurel Prize, an annual international award for the best published collection of nature poetry written in English. simonarmitage.com
Taylor Edmonds is a poet, writer and creative facilitator from South Wales. She is currently the inaugural Poet in Residence for the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, and was named one of Literature Wales’ 2020 Rising Stars. A poet, author and playwright, Owen Sheers’ books of poetry include Skirrid Hill, winner of a Somerset Maugham Award, and the verse drama Pink Mist, winner of the Hay Festival Poetry Medal and Wales Book of the Year. His most recent novel, I Saw a Man, was shortlisted for the Prix Femina Etranger. His theatrical work includes The Two Worlds of Charlie F., winner of the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award, Mametz for 14-18NOW and The Passion for National Theatre Wales, and his film-poem about the Aberfan disaster, The Green Hollow, won three BAFTA Cymru awards. Owen was the recipient of the 2016 St David’s Award for Culture and the 2018 Wilfred Owen Poetry Award. He is chair of Wales PEN Cymru, Professor in Creativity at Swansea University and a co-founder and trustee of the Black Mountains College Project. owensheers.co.uk

Join us for Everything Change’s closing event, in which the current Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, Simon Armitage, will be joined by Taylor Edmonds, the recently appointed Poet in Residence for the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales. Simon will read from his climate-related work and discuss the response of poets to the climate crisis, as well as his creation of The Laurel Prize for eco-poetry. He will then hand over to Taylor to introduce her new role — the first of its kind anywhere in the world — and close Everything Change with readings of her own poems, which imagine some tools to make our planet’s future a brighter one for all.
This event will be introduced and moderated by Owen Sheers, Professor in Creativity at Swansea University.
