Dr Gwennan Higham, Adran y Gymraeg, Prifysgol Abertawe.

Speaker's Biography

Dr Gwennan Higham joined the Department of Welsh, Swansea University in October 2016, following her doctorate at the School of Welsh, Cardiff University, on teaching Welsh to immigrants; building a path to inclusive Welsh citizenship. She has experience of teaching Welsh to adults and expertise in developing Welsh learning opportunities for immigrants. In 2020, she was awarded the Learned Society of Wales Dillwyn Medal (in the field of Humanities and Creative Arts), which is awarded in recognition of the excellence in early career research. Between 2016 and 2019, she managed an EU-funded project that focused on healthcare in minority language settings and the need for appropriate resources for communication and interaction with patients. The title of her latest book is Creu Dinasyddiaeth i Gymru: Mewnfudo Rhyngwladol a'r Gymraeg ( Creating a Citizenship for Wales: International immigration and the Welsh language) (GPC/UWP 2020).

The lecture will discuss research on the attitudes of international immigrants to Wales and to the Welsh language. It will also consider the implications of welcoming immigrants for the linguistic communities of Wales as well as offering policy recommendations in the field of education, welfare and social cohesion.
