The seminar will offer an overview of the College of Arts and Humanities’ activities on the various Copperworks sites, detailing on-going challenges and outlining opportunities for further collaborative engagement. Only a handful of historic buildings now remain of what was once known as Copperopolis, the epi-centre of global copper production. Left to ruin, these buildings have been a constant reminder of the dereliction and deprivation that came in the wake of de-industrialisation. Yet, in the past five years, Swansea’s copperworks have turned a corner with regional-level investment, commercial interest and National Lottery Heritage Funding all contributing to a programme of works that gave arrested decay. In many ways, buildings that were once seen as part of the problem are now being seen as part of the solution in a ‘heritage-led’ regeneration of the area. With ‘place-making’ set to a play a prominent role in long-term social and economic regeneration a the local level, recent UKRI-funded research by the College of Arts and Humanities has set about a programme of public engagement, to ensure that everyone, in one of the most resource-constrained areas of the UK, has the opportunity to play their part.
