Be a Part of Swansea’s Centenary – Join Our Centenary Oak Planting Event

We Need Your Help to Plant New Oaks Across Our Campuses. Money raised at the Taliesin Christmas Makers’ Market has enabled us to secure 50 oak saplings. We’re now looking for 100 students and staff to help plant them across both campuses to mark our Centenary. Anyone wanting to get involved can register with wildlife@swansea.ac.uk to help plant a tree, or assist with their aftercare by watering young trees near their office during dry weather.

The landscape of Singleton is dominated by its veteran oak trees. No other tree hosts anywhere near the diversity of life, and none is as important in our culture as the Welsh Oak, Quercus petraea. These trees are now beginning their slow decline and although they will provide a home for a vast array of wildlife and enjoyment for people for many decades to come, we need to act now to ensure there will be mature oaks on our campuses when the University celebrates its second centenary.

It is hard to overestimate the importance of trees. As well as absorbing CO2 and providing vital oxygen, providing a home and food for birds, bats, bees and a wealth of other wildlife, trees benefit people in many ways, especially when planted in our cities:

· Urban trees help to filter the air, removing harmful particulate and chemical pollution.
· By slowing down the rate that rainfall reaches the ground, and helping soils absorb water, trees reduce flooding.
· Trees also help to moderate temperatures in our towns and cities, providing shade and shelter and reducing heat-island effects, reducing energy bills.
· Trees are great for our health and wellbeing – just being able to see trees reduces stress and blood pressure, and hospital patients with a view of trees recover more quickly.

Singleton Park Campus:
Monday 3rd February, meet outside Fulton House at 12.30pm

Bay Campus:
Tuesday 4th February, meet outside the Great Hall at 12.30pm

Spaces are limited, so booking is essential – email wildlife@swansea.ac.uk to book your place.

There is a real buzz around trees at the moment – for more information check out the Woodland Trust’s website and there are lots of local groups active around Swansea such as Swansea Tree Forum, Coeden Fach and our own Student’s Union Tree Planting Society.
