Speaker

Professor David Penney

Speaker's Biography

Professor David Penney completed his undergraduate degree in Materials Science and
Engineering at Swansea University in 2002. After a brief stint in a uPVC extrusion factory
(three boring weeks) as a Process Engineer, David returned to Swansea to enrol on the
Engineering Doctorate in Steel Technology, researching the microstructure and corrosion
performance of zinc aluminium alloys. The EngD was sponsored by Corus, now Tata Steel,
who David went on to work for in their North Wales, Shotton plant.
While in industry, David continued to conduct research on the manufacture and application
of galvanised coatings and published findings at conferences and journals. He returned
to Swansea in December 2009 to take up the position of Project Manager for the WEFO
funded, Steel Training Research and Innovation Partnership (STRIP), a 5 year project to fund
EngD Post Graduate Researchers. During the 5 year STRIP project, David used his knowledge
of industry and academia to forge new links and expand the company support base for
the scheme. He began writing grant proposals that would grow the EngD into what is now
the M2A and create the Materials Education Training and Learning (METaL) Work Based
Learning scheme that provides funded, 3 day courses in materials and manufacturing topics
for industry partners.
He became an academic member of staff in 2014 on the Innovation and Engagement route,
focusing on creating meaningful opportunities for industrial engagement and collaborative
research and training. Professor Penney has worked on over £70million of successful
grant proposals with various funders that draw in support from more than 65 companies
from across the UK. Along with the M2A and METaL, David co-created Materials Live!, an
outreach programme aiming at encouraging more young people into materials science, the
EPSRC funded SUSTAIN steel manufacturing hub, the Prosperity Partnership on rapid alloy
prototyping with Tata Steel and Warwick University and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral
Training in functional industrial coatings which funds 50 EngD researchers over the next 9
years.

From: 27 Nov 2019, 2 p.m.
To: 27 Nov 2019, 4 p.m.
Location: College of Engineering ESRI Auditorium (Energy Safety Research Institute), Bay Campus

Professor David Penney will deliver a lecture entitled:

'How I galvanised my future with a love of metal'.

In this inaugural lecture, Professor David Penney will talk about his non-traditional route into
academia, first through industry, then as a project manager, and how his family and friends have
played a key role in this journey. He will go on to discuss his main research area of galvanising
and why he thinks this is one of the most interesting areas of manufacturing and metallurgy. It
encompasses so many disciplines and surrounds us in our daily lives from the cars we drive, to the
buildings we live and work in.
Professor Penney will discuss the industry focused research and training grants he has worked
on since joining Swansea and will share some thoughts on how using different funding sources,
working with companies and how writing with friends can increase the success of proposals and
get you through the otherwise lonely and tedious bid writing process.
