WOW Wales One World Film Festivalis a much-loved addition to Taliesin’s highly-rated film programme, and returns from 8-10 April. This is WOW Film Festival’s 18th journey of discovery through the riches of world cinema, bringing an eclectic, colourful and eye-opening view of our world to film fans around Wales.
The WOW programme in 2019 include films such as Cathy Yen’s Dead Pigs, a smart, vibrant comedy set in Shanghai, and Dominga Sotomayor’s Too Late to Die Young, a sensuous coming-of-age tale that woozily evokes a Chilean summer after the fall of the Pinochet dictatorship.
Taliesin is also screening in the festival an essentially feminist film directed by a man: Jafar Panahi’s Three Faces astutely probes Iran’s patriarchal customs and how they impact on Iranian women.
Other themes in 2019’s diverse and wonderful selection are shamanism and eco-feminism. In Aga an elderly Yakut couple live in a yurt in Siberia surrounded by signs that climate change is making their traditional way of life even more precarious. The immersive The Dead and the Others, set in a tribal community in Brazil, is an atmospheric, visually poetic portrait of a young man resisting his destiny as a shaman. In the humorous Woman at War from Iceland, an independent, feisty 40-something leads a double life as an undercover environmental activist.
