“Disability, resilience and lessons that can be learned.”

You are invited to attend the above talk on Monday 3 December, ILS1 Seminar Room (first floor, next to Café Glas).

Monday 3rd December is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 2018. This year’s theme is “Empowering persons with disabilities”.

Our keynote speaker is Dr Rachael Hunter from the Department of Psychology in the College of Human and Health Sciences who, as a person with Multiple Sclerosis, will speak about building resilience.

Dr Rachael Hunter is a Clinical Psychologist and Senior Lecturer in Psychology. After a career in the NHS working in mental health services she took up a position at Swansea University. Following her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in 2012 she has worked closely with the charity ‘Overcoming MS’ to educate, support and empower people with MS in evidence-based lifestyle choices that can improve their health outcomes. Speaking about International Day for People with Disabilities, Rachael says “My experiences have taught me so much about the challenges faced by people living with disabilities, but most importantly about resilience. Academic institutions should be leading the way in facilitating social change by better supporting, understanding and promoting the unique skills that people with disabilities bring to our community”.

The event is open to all. If you would like to attend, please email: equalopportunities@swansea.ac.uk.
