The Royal Welsh College hit the road once again this May, this time sharing Huw Warren’s unique composing style with jazz audiences across Wales.

Swansea born composer Huw Warren presents his jazz suite ‘Do not go Gentle’ based on the poetry of Dylan Thomas. Commissioned by Brecon Jazz Festival for the Dylan Thomas centenary year, the work is the result of Warren’s lifelong interest in Thomas’ poetry and reflects the inherent musicality of the words. This tour is dedicated to the memory of Stan Tracey (1926-2013), whose ‘Under Mild Wood’ suite of 1965 was such a great inspiration to Warren and many other jazz composers.

Huw Warren will be supported by the talented jazz musicians of the Royal Welsh College who take the first set of the performance.

“Warren has been steadily crafting his own form of ‘Welsh Jazz’…a soft, lilt that speaks of the towns and valleys with warmth and optimism” Jazz Views 2017

Supported by the Arts Council of Wales

QUOTE FROM HUW WARREN ABOUT ‘DO NOT GO GENTLE':
“Do not go Gentle is the culmination of a long held desire to create a project based on Dylan Thomas. Both my love of his poetry and the obvious connection of being born in Swansea. My first attempts were song settings, which soon failed because the words were already so musical! Instead, I took a more abstract route with some live text and other pieces influenced by places, characters and events from his work and life. This is very much a continuation of a working method that produced previous projects of mine based on photographs, welsh hymns, early music etc. The touring version in May 2018 includes new music, and a more theatrical setting and I'm very excited to be able to present it to audiences throughout Wales.”
