Speaker's Biography

Born in Prague, then in Czechoslovakia, Lord Dubs was one of 669 Czech-resident, mainly Jewish, children saved by English stockbroker Nicholas Winton and others from the Nazis on the Kindertransport. In 2016, Lord Dubs sponsored an amendment to UK legislation to offer unaccompanied refugee children safe passage to Britain amidst the European migrant crisis. In February 2017, the Home Office abandoned this scheme after accepting 350 out of the planned 3,000 child refugees.

The Eileen Illtyd Memorial Lecture is supported by a gift by llltyd David, formerly Head of Extra Mural Studies (1945-60) at University of Wales Swansea. The fund was established as a memorial to his wife, Eileen, a former student, 1928-30, who died on 30th August 1975. The purpose of the fund is to promote the study of Human Rights in their historical, international, political, economic, social and legal context, and where possible.
