College of Science

This event is part of the Swansea Science Cafe series

Speaker

Dr Yamni Nigam

From: 29 Nov 2017, 7:30 p.m.
To: None
Location: National Waterfront Museum, Swansea

In this talk, Dr Yamni Nigam, Associate Professor in Biomedical Science at Swansea University, will be delving into the world of maggots.
At the event, Dr Nigam will be discussing how in our current medical climate, due to the growth in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, maggot therapy is now facing a modern resurgence. Dr Nigam will explain the ways we can harness the benefits of maggots, such as cleaning our un-cleanable wounds and salvaging our un-salvageable limbs.
Maggots are known to be the uninvited guest at a corpse, and most people have a strong repulsion for them, but it hasn’t always been this way. A long time ago, ancient tribes and cultures used the tiny little fly larvae to help them recover and heal.
In her talk, Dr Nigam will help alter public opinion of the maggot, away from being “minging monstrosities”, and towards the medical marvels they are.
