Dr Rhian Andrews

Speaker's Biography

Dr Rhian Andrews is a native of Swansea. Having graduated from Bangor and Dublin she lectured in the Celtic Department at Queen's University, Belfast, until retiring. Her field of research is the work of the Poets of the Princes, the court poets of the period 1100-1300. Dr Andrews has published articles on prosody, grammar, historical context, literary themes and authorship of these poems. She has edited poems by three of the poets in The Work Bleddyn Fardd and other Poets of the Second Half of the Thirteenth Century (1996), the seventh volume in the Poets of the Princes Series, the first project of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies. She has edited a selection of 33 of the poems of the series in her volume Welsh Court Poems (2007).

Canu Crefyddol Elidir Sais (The Religious Poems of Elidir Sais)
Elidir Sais was a court poet in Gwynedd in the second half of the twelfth century. Six of his poems to God survive and the lecture will consider what they tell us about his faith and his religious knowledge. This is a Welsh medium event.
