Speaker's Biography

Peter Vaughan became a Vice Chair of the National Police Chiefs Council in April 2015, having served as Vice President and the last President (Acting) of ACPO.

Peter is proud to be the Chief Constable of the police force he joined in 1984. He is proud to have served at every rank in all parts of the force area, policing the communities where he grew up and still lives.

Prior to this he attended Swansea University studying Management Science and Operations Research. He obtained a first class honours degree. Peter has a diploma in Applied Criminology from Cambridge University.

In 2003, Peter left South Wales Police for three years taking up the role of Assistant Chief Constable for Wiltshire Constabulary. As the only ACC, he was responsible for all operational matters.

In 2007, he returned to South Wales Police as Assistant Chief Constable and then Deputy Chief Constable. In 2010 he became the Chief Constable.

In 2013 Peter was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in the New Year Honours. He is a Deputy Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan and a Commander of the Order of St John Cymru where he serves as an Independent Trustee.

He also chairs the Cwm Taf Regional Collaboration Board and the Welsh Joint Emergency Service Group (JESG). This group is a collective of senior military and emergency service leaders in Wales that meet to further enhance joint civil protection.

He has previously been the last President of ACPO and a Vice Chair of the NPCC.

In 2014 Peter was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Cardiff University. In 2015 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of South Wales. In 2017 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Swansea University.

Peter is married with two children, is a very proud Grampa and also enjoys keeping fit and is a keen rugby fan.
