The National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales, made up of the cream of Wales’s musical youth, present a sparkling selection of modern classics. Centred around Rhapsody in Blue, George Gershwin’s iconic showpiece for piano which will be performed in its original version for the Paul Whiteman Band, the programme includes works by Hesketh and McNeff plus Judith Bingham’s Three American Icons, a gripping, sometimes disturbing evocation of 50s and 60s culture, of Big Bands, cult TV and Cinema, set against the background of the Kennedy assassination.
The NYWOW has developed an enviable reputation for the performance of new music, premiering a large number of works by leading Welsh composers. It will give the first performance of On This Precious Earth by Tˆy Cerdd’s Composer in Residence, Rhian Samuel which in turn explores the fragility of our planet, revels in the beauty of the Earth and ends in a spirit of hope, generosity and kindness.
