The age of information was thought to herald a new age of Enlightenment. New ways of communicating gave everyone a voice and were lauded as the next step in strengthening democracy. Instead we’ve seen the rise of fake news, misinformation and lies. Public forums such as Twitter rife with trolls spewing insults, while authoritarian politicians gain favour.
It’s a ‘post truth’ world where facts are whatever people want to believe.
Heather Brooke is an award-winning journalist whose investigative journalism and legal action against the British Parliament for disclosure of MPs’ expenses was the catalyst for the scandal of 2009.
