Edward David’s lecture develops themes in his University Centenary Essay on “Illtyd David and the Extra-Mural Community 1921-81”. He explores the role of Swansea University in providing adult education in the Swansea region, bringing together the objectives of the founders of the University, the democratic values of the WEA, and the traditional aspirations of “Prifysgol y Werin” to help provide access opportunities for higher education and to sustain the solidarity of a community facing unprecedented economic and political challenges in the inter-war period.
