Speaker's Biography

Dr Gethin Matthews' current research focuses on the experiences of the Welsh in the First World War, and the profound impact of that conflict on the Welsh psyche. As well as examining how Welsh society and culture was directly affected by the events of 1914-1918, he is interested in the long-term effects of the War upon Wales, and how individual Welshmen who were involved in the fighting tried to make sense of their experiences decades later. Since 2011 he has been employed as a Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol lecturer in history with responsibility for the Welsh-medium tuition at Swansea University. ( Welsh medium event.)

Join Dr Gethin Matthews as he discusses his book 'Having a Go at the Kaiser' (UWP) which was shortlisted for the Wales Book of the Year prize 2019, and which contains over a hundred letters sent home by three Swansea brothers during the Great War, together with a variety of other material found in family collections. There will be an opportunity to see pictures of the three brothers from Mynyddbach on the outskirts of Swansea, and to hear how they tried to keep family bonds strong and nurture their identity as civilians until the time came to give up their uniforms.
