In 1976 the late John Keegan published a classic book on military history entitled The Face of Battle. In this study he attempted, with great success, to establish the factors which determined success or failure in three major battles (Agincourt, Waterloo, and the Somme), covering, above all, the psychological dimensions of warfare. He was, in particular, concerned with the factors which enable soldiers to confront the trauma of battle. In this lecture I want to examine the extent to which the results of his studies of second-millennium conflicts can be applied to Ancient Egypt.
