Speaker's Biography

Dr Gethin Matthews graduated in Psychology from Caius College Cambridge in 1989. He then spent many years working for a number of television companies on a variety of programmes.As he was mostly interested in history television programmes, he decided to pursue his interest in history by starting to study towards a doctorate in the Department of History and Welsh History at Cardiff University. His research topic was the history of the Welsh in the Cariboo Gold Rush in British Columbia. He has worked on the ‘Welsh Voices of the Great War Online’ project, a scheme which collected material from the Great War period from families across Wales, and placed it on the web. All the material can now be found on the People's Collection Wales website. his areas of expertise include the history of Wales during the Victorian Era and the early twentieth century;the history of the Welsh abroad, especially the Welsh in North America and the Welsh in the goldfields and Wales and the Great War, especially the war’s effects on culture and society in Wales.

Come and hear Dr Gethin Matthews, Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Lecturer in the Department of History, Swansea University discuss his new book 'Having a Go at the Kaiser’: A Welsh family at war’ (University of Wales Press.) This book is based on more than a hundred letters penned by three brothers from Mynyddbach during the First World War. Richard, Gabriel and Ivor Eustis wrote home about a range of different issues as the war was being waged, keeping the family bonds strong during their absence. The dynamics of the family are revealed in letters full of sibling rivalry and affection.There will also be items performed during the evening by the choir of Ysgol Gyfun Bryn Tawe. Free entry and all welcome.
